Today, the Cape Town Carnival was taken seriously by Capetonians. By seriously, I mean that everyone put on their most Capetonian face and they had fun for South Africa.
Unfortunately, I missed the actual event but I’m so used to experiencing reality through multimedia, it didn’t make much difference. Photos and videos filled Twitter and Facebook feeds and later in the evening, a truckload of bare-chested firemen managed to get most of the girls and a lot of the guys on Long St very hot under the collar as they made their way back to whichever calendar they had been taken from.
I imagine that the carnival was a celebration of Cape Town’s colourful history and present. Personalities that meld different cultures together brought the streets to life and I think that we may have found a cure for racism today: carnival and colours, in Cape Town, of course.
