Churches and other religious institutions essentially provide a gathering point for people who share similar world views. Like cities? 

Built on decades of tradition and culture, our cities give us a sense of power. Exercising our ability to dominate the natural environment, we’ve realized our power as a race of thinking beings.

As the saying goes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
